French Immersion

This is our ninth  year with our fabulous French Immersion Program. We have classes from Kindergarten to grade seven. Children are taught all their subjects in French, with some English instruction beginning in grade 4. It is exciting to integrate the French language into the wonderful school community at Tweedsmuir.

Teacher-Librarian / Computer Lab Support

Student learning is supported through class time in the library and/or the computer lab . Assistance is available for research and other projects as well as enrichment and general student interest. A special section in the library contains books of interest to parents. The school maintains a fully networked computer lab and computers are available in classrooms.

The Learning Centre

The Learning Center is a positive place that supports all students with learning needs. This includes students who receive special education funding and those who don't. The main concept is to be a seamless program that supports the delivery of Individual Education Plans for students with special needs and to also support students who need help occasionally.

The Learning Center is also a place where technology is used to implement the curriculum to deliver programs that support student learning on an individual level. Currently, we have the core curriculum available on Successmaker and ESL instruction on Rosetta Stone.

We keep a record of student referrals to the Learning Center to help school staff better support students. This is achieved by clearly identifying trends in individual students' learning, listing interventions completed, and noting how the student is learning.

In the Learning Center, staff provide a quiet learning environment  for all students. Students also work independently or in groups at tables, or on computers. During a student's time in the Learning Center, he/she may also receive support from staff:

  • Resource Teachers
  • ESL Teachers
  • Counselor
  • Special Education Assistants
  • Child Care Worker

The support that students receive in the Learning Center is guided directly by classroom teachers and resource teachers, via information on the Learning Center referral.

We are looking forward to being open to students all day and to having another positive year at Lord Tweedsmuir.

Peer Supervisors

Our Peer Supervision program is an important part of keeping our school safe. Peer Supervisors are grade six and seven students who have been trained to help their fellow students solve problems. Whether it is an argument among friends, a disagreement about the rules of a game or difficulty within a group, peer supervisors can help students communicate in a safe and positive way.

The peer supervision program is run out of the Learning Center and is coordinated by our Child Care Worker, Mrs. Goertz.  Students are referred by an adult or students may ask to speak to a peer supervisor for support. Teachers have referral forms in their classrooms and there are extra forms available at the Learning Center. If you have a disagreement or a problem to solve you might consider the peer supervisors as a safe and peaceful way to meet your needs.

Safe Arrival Program

The purpose of the Safe Arrival Program is to help ensure that all children arrive safely at school. Our school secretary, Mrs. Bates coordinates this program. If for any reason your child will be absent or late, please notify the school by telephone, leaving a message with your child's full name and teacher's name, or by sending a note to your child's teacher explaining his/her absence.

Lost and Found

An incredible number of lost or misplaced articles are turned in to the office each year. Many items are never claimed by the owner. A few times during the year, this collection is laid out for parents and students to check. Our "collection" is available for viewing any time, so please do ask at the office if something is missing. Valuables of any kind should never be brought to school, especially Items such as expensive jewelry, sound systems, sports equipment, toys, etc. The school can not be responsible for the loss of any such personal items.
