The Student Services model at Lord Kelvin School
revolves around our primary goal of maintaining and enhancing the positive
climate and tone of the school.
COUNSELING
SERVICES
Our counseling team consists of a school counselor, child care workers, and an
aboriginal support worker. Working in groups and one-to-one with students,
they address such issues as anxiety, anger, bullying, social skills and
behavioural challenges, as well as providing daily emotional support.
RESOURCE PROGRAM
Lord Kelvin's Resource Program supports the learning of
students requiring individualized attention. Classroom and resource
teachers work together to provide appropriate programming for students
needing English instruction, and additional instruction
with basic skills.
With the invaluable support of Special Education
Assistants, resource programs are delivered to students one to one, in
small groups or in the context of the classroom.
ABORIGINAL EDUCATION PROGRAM
Understanding History, Culture,
Tradition...
We are proud to be able to say that we are seeing an
increasing awareness throughout our school of First Nations culture and
traditions, and a growing sense of pride being exhibited by our First
Nations students. Our First Nations Cultural Worker is asking for input from parents regarding Aboriginal
Education programs within the school.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
Students with English as a Second Language learning
needs are assessed by an ESL teacher to develop an annual education plan.
For each child requiring this service, classroom adaptations are made to
support the development of age appropriate literacy skills in reading,
writing, and oral skills. Additional support is provided by the ESL
teachers. Kindergarten students are offered a full day
program to strengthen their language skills.
ATHLETICS PROGRAM
Lord Kelvin School has a busy and fun-filled athletics
program. Apart from regular physical education classes, numerous staff
members volunteer their time to coach a variety of athletic activities
throughout the year. Students not only gain from the physical fitness that this provide,
they also learn leadership skills, confidence and team spirit.
