| SAFE ARRIVAL PROGRAM |
| The purpose of the Safe
Arrival Program is to help ensure that all children arrive safely at
school. Our school secretary and office assistant will be coordinating
the implementation this program.
If
for any reason your child is going to be absent or late, please notify the
school by telephone at 604-517-6060, or by sending a note to your child's teacher,
explaining his/her absence. |
| You may also leave a
message on the school's answering machine before or after school
hours. When calling, please give the first and last name of your
child, the name of his/her teacher, and the reason for the absence. If you know your child is
going to be absent for more than one day, please indicate how many days
may be involved. |
| This
Program can only be effective if parents remember to call the school when
children are away or late. |
|
| SAFETY POLICY |
| In an effort to improve
safety procedures and to minimize classroom interruptions during the
school day we ask that: |
Student absences and/or late arrivals
must be phoned in daily to the office at 604-517-6060.
If you must remove a student during the school day,
for either planned or unexpected reasons, you must report to the office.
Office Staff will: locate your child’s class, intercom the teacher to
have the student prepared for leaving, have the student sent to meet you
at the office, and make note of their exit.
Any parent/guardian that brings lunch for a student
must leave it at the office. If this is your regular routine, your child
will know to automatically come to the office at lunch time. If this is
a rare occurrence, we will call the child at noon. Please mark your
child’s lunch with their name and teacher’s name.
All visitors on the school site MUST wear
identification so that they are identifiable to students, staff, and
parents, as permissible visitors on school business. If you are
volunteering or visiting in a classroom you must first sign-in at the
office. You will be given a VISITOR tag to wear. Please return to the
office to sign out when you are finished. In any emergency situation we
must be able to account for the whereabouts of all students, staff and
visitors on site.
Please do not personally deliver homework, musical
instruments, clothing or other items to your child’s classroom. Always
proceed directly to the school office. Familiarizing yourself with the
office staff will prove to be a beneficial security measure for us all.
The school office can only administer medication to
a student, after a consent form has been completed, signed by a doctor,
and filed at the office. A parent can come to the school to administer
medication to their child, but must come to the office where they will
be met by their child. NO CHILD IS TO HAVE MEDICATION ON THEIR PERSON,
IN BACKPACKS OR IN THEIR DESK, DURING A SCHOOL DAY. IF LOST
INADVERTENTLY IT COULD FALL INTO THE HANDS OF A CHILD WHO MAY EAT IT
THINKING IT’S CANDY.
Please keep the office informed of your address and
telephone number changes so that you can be reached promptly in the
event of an emergency.
Unfortunately, students cannot bring cameras, or
cell phone cameras to school, expecting to casually photograph friends
either inside the classroom or outside on the playground. There are
families who have requested that their child(ren) not be photographed.
Permission must be requested and granted by the principal.
Students who bring cell phones to school must leave
them at the office during the school day and pick them up after the 2:45
bell.
Lord Kelvin is a closed campus, meaning students are
expected to remain at school once they arrive on site in the morning,
until they are dismissed at the end of their last class. Students are not
allowed to make trips to the store. If you want your child(ren) to walk
home for lunch you must phone the office, or provide your child(ren) with
a written note to present to their teacher. |
|
| EMERGENCY DRILLS |
| Emergency drills (ie. fire and
earth-quake) will be held several times throughout the year. It is
extremely important that staff, students, and parents complete these
exercises in a serious and diligent manner. |
|
| VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL |
| All the visitors to the school MUST let
the office know of their presence. Any unusual persons, conditions, or
events noticed by students, parents or staff should be reported to the
office and will be followed up on. |
|
| FIRST AID |
| First Aid is available at the school
office. All injuries should be reported. It is imperative that parents
supply the school with current emergency contact names and phone numbers.
Parents should also report any student with severe allergic reactions or
critical medical conditions. No medication will be administered by
teachers or any other staff unless prior authorization and medical
instructions are obtained. |
|
| BIKE, ROLLERBLADES, SKATEBOARDS
AND SCOOTERS |
| Only bikes are allowed on school grounds
during school hours. Bikes must be walked on the school causeways at all
times and kept locked in bike racks in the designated area at school.
Remember to lock up your bike up at school. |
| Parents are asked to review
bike safety with their children. Helmets are required. |
|
| BREAKFAST PROGRAM |
| We believe that a healthy
body nourishes a healthy mind. Breakfast is provided to students
(the program is for students only) who have not eaten breakfast on a
school day. |
|
| SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM |
| The school lunch program is provided to a
limited number of students at a subsidized rate of cost. Notices go
home monthly with the details on the Lunch Program. |
|
| LUNCH HOUR |
| Supervised classrooms are
provided for those children eating lunch at school. Primary classes
have intermediate students as monitors and intermediate classes have
Special Education Assistants and Noon Hour Supervisors as
supervisors. Students eating
at school are expected to stay on the school grounds throughout the lunch
hour. Assistants supervise
students on the playground during the lunch break. Instructions
given to students by the supervisors are to be respected and followed. |
|
| BAD WEATHER DAYS |
| Unless it is pouring
rain, students are expected to
go outside at recess and lunch. Please have your children
dress appropriately for the weather, particularly on cold, rainy
days. It is suggested that a change of clothes be sent in their
backpacks on bad weather days. |
|
| REPORT CARDS |
| Report cards are provided
three times a year, in early December, March, and late June. Interviews
are available with teachers during the year if requested. |
|
| SCHOOL PHOTOS |
Individual photos are
taken in the fall and class/group photo's are taken in the spring by
Life-Touch Photography. Class photos and
individual photos may be purchased and notices will go home regarding
this.
BRING YOUR BEST SMILE. |
|
| RECYCLING PROGRAM |
| Lord Kelvin is very
active in the recycling program. Every effort is made to recycle paper,
and juice boxes. |
|
| SCHOOL PATROL |
| Mary Tsoupakis is our school crossing
guard. She is on duty at the intersection of 10th street and 7th
avenue during the following times: 8:30 - 9:00 AM, 12:00 - 12:45 PM, 2:45
- 3:30 PM. |
| For everyone's safety, please support our
crossing guard by teaching your child to cross only with our crossing
guard. |
|
| BLOCK PARENTS |
| Students should be made aware that any
home displaying the Block Parent sign is a safe place where they can get
help from an adult. |
| Block Parents go through a security check
by the police. |
| More Block Parents are needed on several
streets. If you would like to be a block parent in your
neighbourhood, please contact the school. |
|
| SUPPORTING POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR |
| In most cases students who behave in a
disrespectful or irresponsible manner are dealt with by the playground
supervisor and/or the classroom teacher. This may include a parent-teacher
conference. If the discipline procedures used by the classroom teacher are
exhausted and the student continues to misbehave, the student is sent to
the principal's office. |
| Serious incidents involving willful
disobedience or behavior which is harmful to others will result in
immediate referral to the principal. When a student is sent to the
principal's office the following steps are taken: |
| - First referral: Reprimand and warning
about the consequences of any further misbehavior. |
| - Second referral: Reprimand
and a telephone call to the student's parents informing them of the
situation and the consequences of any further misbehavior. |
| - Third referral: Conference
with the students parents regarding behavior and consequences. |
|
| WHO TO CALL? |
| If you have a question or concern
regarding school, or classroom practice or policy, you should first talk to the
teacher. If the matter is not clarified to your satisfaction, you should next contact the school
principal. |
